New Taipei City Begins Vaccinating Children

New Taipei City began inoculating children aged six to 11 with the Moderna vaccine on May 3. Mayor Hou Yu-ih inspected the proceedings at Dingxi Elementary School. About 30 percent of older students in this elementary school will be vaccinated.

Student: “My mind is completely blank.”

Elementary school students wait in line to get the Moderna vaccine. Some were relaxed, while others were nervous.

Student: “It was just a prick, like a mosquito bite.”

New Taipei City began inoculating children aged six to 11 with the Moderna vaccine on May 3. The Central Epidemic Command Center recently announced that the Pfizer-BNT vaccine for children may arrive by mid-May, so many parents decided to revoke their permission.

Parent: “Right now, in other countries, it looks like fewer people are getting the Moderna vaccine. In the U.S., the BNT vaccine is the most popular. It's also safer for children.”

Principal: “We respect the wishes of parents. If they have family doctors or clinics they're familiar with, then they can go there to ask questions and have all their questions answered before they make a decision.”

New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih personally inspected the proceedings at Dingxi Elementary School. The students are getting vaccinated in two groups. The first group is older students, and 30 percent of them will be vaccinated. Once the vaccination is completed, the entire school will take classes online for two days. This way, any vaccinated student that feels unwell can rest at home. They can also request two days of vaccination leave.

Hou Yu-ih, Mayor, New Taipei City: “Today, 30 percent of the students will get the Moderna vaccine. Parents can also consider the BNT vaccine, many have asked when it will arrive.”

Discussions are underway on whether to allow the mixing and matching of vaccines. Students aged six or above at elementary school-affiliated kindergartens and students who are unable to get vaccinated at their schools will be given slips by their schools so they can get vaccinated at medical institutions at their convenience.
