French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy has died at the age of 91. His partner Philippe Venet announced the news, saying Givenchy passed away on Mar. 10 Paris time.
In the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," Audrey Hepburn's character Holly Golightly wears an elegant little black dress. This little black dress, designed by French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, is considered one of the most iconic items of clothing in the 20th century. The actress and designer's friendship and professional partnership lasted more than 40 years. Givenchy was born in France in 1927 to an aristocratic family. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but he was more interested in fashion. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris to study fine arts. In 1952, when he was 24, he opened his own design house, which was an instant success. His designs became synonymous with elegance and glamour. His clients included former American first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly, the Duchess of Windsor and actress Ingrid Bergman. Classic designs included puff-sleeved shirts, flared capris and H-line dresses, which were completely different than another leading fashion house of the time, Christian Dior. Givenchy retired in 1995 after 40 years in the fashion business. Many renowned designers attended his last show.
It's very emotional to have all that wonderful designers come; some you know like Saint Laurent have not finished his collection. I think Valentino, maybe I don't know if he has finished his collection, but to take the time, you know, to give me that salute, this is wonderful.
In his retirement, Givenchy and his partner, former couture designer Philippe Venet, lived in a Renaissance-style castle near Paris. On Mar. 12, Venet announced through the Givenchy fashion house that Givenchy passed away on Mar. 10 in his sleep. He was 91.
