BNT Close to Delivering Vaccines to Taiwan BNT德原廠:與台約好期程 手續完成就交貨

While the vaccine coverage rate  stands at around 38 percent, only 2.4 percent are fully vaccinated with two shots, leading to anticipations of more doses of vaccine to arrive. Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration has granted the emergency use authorization to the Pfizer BNT vaccine. Its German manufacturer said the 15 million vaccines are almost ready for delivery, which could be another exciting news following the latest shipment of 524,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses that arrived on August 12.

Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed the emergency use authorization (EUA) process for the PfizerBioNTech (BNT) COVID-19 vaccine on August 3. It is not yet certain when the vaccines would be delivered to Taiwan, but the doses would be shipped as soon as all the necessary procedures are through. According to statistics from the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), over 9.43 million doses have been administered, which translates into a coverage rate of 37.78 percent. However, only 565,947 people, or 2.4 percent, have completed both shots. With less than enough shipments of Moderna and AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccines purchased by the Taiwanese government arriving ever so slowly, the prioritization of vaccinations has always been the center of attention in the nation.

Huang Li-min, Honorary Chair, Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan:”If the alpha strain of the virus continues to be the mainstream, then it is best to get as many people vaccinated with at least one dose. But if the delta strain or any other variants that have been found to greatly diminish the effectiveness of our current vaccines takes over, it is safer then to have high-risk groups fully vaccinated as soon as possible.”

To help replenish the nation's depleted vaccine stockpile, the CECC announced that the domestic COVID-19 vaccine developed by Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp. (MVC), which has been approved by Taiwan's FDA, will be available for the sixth round of vaccination coming up. The National Policy Foundation held a press conference recently and said that such a decision violates personal autonomy while people still have doubts over the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.

Chen Yi-min, Convenor, Sustainable Development Div., National Policy Foundation:”CNN has reported that MVC does not have enough data yet for its vaccine efficacy. However, the MVC spokesperson said there would be no protection against the virus if you choose not to get vaccinated. It is an irresponsible statement and I don't think the people of Taiwan need to accept that as an answer. “

Meanwhile, people are concerned over the relaunch of the Taiwan-Palau travel taking place at the end of August. There have been criticisms over the "five plus nine" self-health management upon returning from Palau to Taiwan being too loose, which could bring in infections as it did with the China Airline pilots previously while quarantining at the Novotel Airport Hotel mixed with regular guests.  CECC rejected the comparison and emphasized that the Novotel infections did not erupt into a chain of infections within the general community. Taiwan Counter-Contagious Diseases Society Chairman Wang Jen-hsien commented saying that not getting the China Airline pilots vaccinated first when Taiwan was still relatively free from the pandemic during the early stages was a plain mistake that should not have been made.
