YANG WILL NOT RENEW TERM, NTU WILL ELECT NEW PRESIDENT|楊泮池不續任 台大明年一月遴選新校長

National Taiwan University held an emergency university affairs meeting on the morning of Apr. 23rd to discuss the fate of university President Yang Pan-chyr, who has been caught up in a recent academic fraud scandal. Yang attended the meeting in person and reiterated his intention to depart from his position after his term ends, expressing the hope that the meeting will not hold a vote on the matter. The meeting reached a decision to convene an election committee by the end of June, which will elect a new president by the end of next January. Even before the emergency university affairs meeting began, retired NTU professor Wang Ming-tsung broken into the meeting hall and demanded the immediate resignation of university President Yang Pan-chyr. Arguments and physical altercations ensued. Wang was eventually ejected from the room and the meeting proceeded. The topic of the morning session was President Yang's desire not to renew his contract. He emphasized that he has done nothing unethical. Previously, Yang had announced that he will not continue as president once his term ends this June. Four days later, the Ministry of Education officially demanded that NTU begin the selection process for a new president immediately, in a move seen as intervening in the university's affairs.
