The pick-up area of Taichung's Toujia Elementary School has drawn criticism. A 100-meter-long pathway was built to facilitate the picking up and dropping off of students but the S-curve design seems to defeat its purpose.
The curvature of this pathway makes it look like this vehicle is taking the s-curve portion of the driving license road test.
This is the pathway located behind Taichung's Toujia Elementary School, which has 2,000 teachers and students. It is 100 meters long, and was meant to make it easier for parents to drop off and pick up their children and reduce the amount of time that students spend walking on roads. Parents were left dumbfounded by the design.
I was stunned. (Why?) It was built on top of a gutter, and you could have built it straight from over here. I don't know why they designed it like this.
The s-shaped pathway has two sharp bends, and gets congested during pickup and drop-off hours. Parents have found they still need to park next to the main road and wait for their children to come out. This pathway cost NT$20 million to construct, which came out of the Taichung City Government's second reserve fund.
This will definitely cause collisions. Look at it, you'll have to brake and then slowly drive on, and then you'll hit here. Parents won't be able to drive safely to bring their children. They'll have to walk.
The city's Construction Bureau says the pathway was designed this way because of expropriation issues. It says parts of the pathway and the positioning of streetlights are adjustable.
There were some limiting conditions in terms of topography, and it wasn't originally designed to be a road open to traffic. We have already asked the designers and manufacturers to make improvements to the curved sections, which may cause traffic issues.
This pathway was built on top of an existing irrigation canal, and residents have concerns about its flood-prevention function. The Construction Bureau says the project passed a Water Resources Bureau assessment, so there should be no issues.
