Plastic Waste Weighs Heavily on Environment|

Handmade drinks are extremely popular, but the single-use cups also generate lots of waste. The Society of Wilderness says the people of Taiwan spend NT$2 billion on beverage cups a year. During beach cleanup activities in 2019, it was found that 70 percent of marine trash were related to drinks, including 73.2 percent generated by beverages. The Environmental Protection Administration says the objective is to eliminate disposable tableware and plastic cups by 2025.

A recent beach cleanup activity collected a large pile of marine trash, including nearly a thousand beverage cups, which have been used to create a snowman. Handmade drinks may be very popular, but they are also very harmful to the environment. The Society of Wilderness recently released statistics from its beach cleanup activities in 2019. The list of top 10 types of marine trash included plastic bottle caps, plastic bottles, straws, fishing floats, disposable tableware, and takeout beverage cups.

These plastic, disposable cups wash up on the beach after typhoons. A very huge amount is also flushed out by rivers.

The Society of Wilderness says 70 percent of the top 10 types of marine trash are related to drinks. Of that amount, drink-related trash, including cups, bottles, and straws, accounted for 73.2 percent, while food-related trash, including tableware and containers, accounted for 26.8 percent. Environmental groups urge the public to utilize reusable tableware and cups, saying this can help to significantly reduce the volume of marine trash. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration has set an objective of prohibiting disposable tableware and drink cups by 2030. It hopes to carry out Taiwan's anti-plastic campaign in line with United Nations objectives for fighting against plastic pollution.

In reality, limiting and reducing plastic use until zero plastic is achieved is a global trend and direction. The United Nations Environment Assembly has set a goal of greatly reducing the use of disposable plastic goods by 2030. We will work in line with this direction.

The EPA banned four types of stores from providing plastic straws in July. It aims to ban the use of all disposable plastic goods such as cups, tableware, and straws by 2025 and use quantities to regulate prices. It says it will need to discuss this issue with society and reach a consensus in order to effectively achieve this goal.
