Su Gives Wang Six Months to Resolve Problems

Economic Affairs Minister Wang Mei-hua should remain in her post, according to Premier Su Tseng-chang, despite calls from opposition parties for Wang to take responsibility for the 303 nationwide power outage. Su also asked Wang to come up with a plan to enhance the stability and resilience of the island's power grid within 6 months.
Economic Affairs Minister Wang Mei-hua ignored the media and dashed into the legislature as she arrived for an interpellation. Wang requested to be disciplined following the nationwide power failure on March 3, and Premier Su Tseng-chang insisted that she remain in her post. However, opposition parties said Wang needs to take political responsibility for the failures in the Tsai administration's electricity supply policies by stepping down.
William Tseng, Legislator (KMT): “What the people and industries care about is whether we have sufficient electricity and whether there will be power failures. So many nationwide power failures have happened during this time. Minister Wang Mei-hua of course should step down. Step down! Step down!”
Jang Chyi-lu, Legislator (TPP): “I think people want to know why no one has to take responsibility for this incident. It appears that her position is completely secure, that she has political support or a patron. This is what I don't understand. ”
In response, Su said he decided to retain Wang as minister because she is administratively capable and because he asked her to resolve grid issues.
Su Tseng-chang, ROC Premier: “Minister Wang Mei-hua told me one more time that she wants to take political responsibility. However, I asked her to find solutions to all types of problems including operations supervision and grid resilience within six months' time.”
There have been four widespread power failures during Tsai Ing-wen's time in office, including three with Wang as economic affairs minister. Su has given Wang a deadline, and it remains to be seen whether Wang will be up to the task of identifying problems and making improvements to prevent new power failures that affect people's livelihoods and economic development.
