China has frequently sent drones to fly around Dongsha Island in recent times, potentially creating a gray-zone conflict. Ocean Affairs Minister Lee Chung-wei says they will be shot down if they do enter Taiwan's airspace.
China has frequently sent drones to encircle Dongsha Island in recent times, which some have interpreted as an attempt to create a gray-zone conflict. Ocean Affairs Minister Lee Chung-wei said during a legislative interpellation on April 7 that the drones are being used for reconnaissance purposes but they have not entered restricted airspace. Instead, they are flying at a distance to create small nuisances. Some legislators demanded a tough response.

I'm not scared of you, I have anti-aircraft defense missiles here waiting for you. Legislator, you mustn't say things like if I have to shoot them down, then I'll shoot them down. There are regulations that we must follow. What I mean is that you must make advance deployments so that you're ready for their arrival. Let me inform you, we have standard operating procedures if they enter and a conflict suddenly erupts. We will open fire if required by the situation.
The Coast Guard has deployed nearly 300 Kestrel anti-armor rockets on Dongsha Island and Nansha Island to strengthen their defensive and anti-landing capabilities. The Coast Guard is also scheduled to carry out live ammunition exercises that will simulate China trying to invade Dongsha Island and the military responding by trying to destroy landing craft in the waters off of Dongsha Island on April 25 and May 2. Lee said these are routine drills.
They are routine exercises, and were not specially planned for those times. The rockets are to be used primarily for anti-vehicle armor and anti-landing purposes. I think they are purely defensive weapons.
An Ocean Affairs Council report indicated the situation in the South China Sea is tense and Taiwan urgently needs to strengthen its patrol and protective capabilities. Taiwan is currently extending Taiping Island's dock to allow 100-ton warships to be stationed there for long periods of time to protect coastal sovereignty.
