The Formosa Fun Coast explosion was the most serious accident in Taiwan. It caused 499 to suffer burns and caused 15 deaths. June 27 marks the one year anniversary of the explosion and burn victims and experts called for the public to make a critical examination of public safety issues.
Standing on the stage, National Taiwan University student Chien Yuan-Ling described what happened during the Formosa Fun Coast explosion. She never expected her first visit to the Formosa Fun Coast to turn out to be the last.

I didn't know it was a burn injury. I only know I needed to leave the place as soon as possible, so I ran. But I fell. I felt I would die in the fire.
28-year-old Liu Chia-Shun rushed back to the scene to save people during the explosion and got a 70 percent burns. After medical treatment, he is back on
the basketball court, facing his new life.

I was so happy when I found out that I could stand again. I was not confined to bed, and I could finally go see the outside world. I was really excited.
The Formosa Fun Coast explosion was the most serious public safety accident in Taiwan. Have Taiwanese learned any lessons from the incident?
==SHAN HSIN YU Asst. Prof. Civil Engrng. Nat. Chiao Tung University==
Most of the time, we choose to believe that this kind of accident won't happen to us. We think that because we do well in our daily lives, if such accidents were to happen, we would not be those who suffer. However, both the impact and frequency of accidents are beyond our experience. It doesn't mean that accidents won't happen if you have never had one. A lot of people have this kind of attitude when they attend crowded events.
Fire experts pointed out that running will disperse more powder, and cause the fire to spread quickly.
==LIN CHIN HUNG, Frmr Sec. Chf Nat. Fire Agency's Disaster Mngt. Division==
If you don't touch burning powder, it will extinguish in a second. The best thing to do is cover your face and stand still in this kind of situation.
To avoid this type of incident happening again, experts believe that both the government and the public should raise public safety awareness.
