Man Arrested for 6th DUI 才因酒駕服刑出獄 男第6次酒駕被逮

Taiwan's drunk driving problem is not getting any better. On the 21st, police stopped a drunk driver who had only just gotten out of prison for multiple drunk driving offenses. This was the driver's sixth DUI. Under current laws, fines go up with each repeat offense and drivers have their names and photos published after their third offense.

On the 21st, Mituo police stopped a drunk driver at a stoplight checkpoint. The driver stank of alcohol.

Police: “You've had five DUIs. Why do you keep doing this?”

Driver: “I thought enough time had passed.”

This was the driver's sixth DUI. Not only that, he had only just gotten out of prison for multiple drunk driving offenses.

Hung Tzu-tang, Chief, Mituo Police Station: “A second DUI in 10 years results in harsher punishment. Scooter drivers can be fined up to NT$90,000, while car drivers can be fined up to NT$120,000. The fine goes up by NT$90,000 for every DUI after that. Drivers will also have their licenses revoked.”

Under current laws, a third DUI results in a driver's name and photo being published. The fine amount also goes up and their license is also revoked. Of note, the regulation applies to not only car and scooter drivers, but cyclists as well.

Driver: “(I thought) it was OK to ride a bike after drinking.”

Police: “No, it's not OK.”

Police remind everyone that riding a bicycle while under the influence will be subject to fines of NT$600-1,200.

警車追著紅燈右轉的機車要攔車，21日深夜高雄彌陀分駐所員警路上發現民眾違規，趕緊追上去攔查，一停下來就發現民眾身上有酒味。

警方說：「你酒駕5遍了，你怎麼喝酒後都要騎車。」民眾則回：「我想說隔很久了。」

民眾酒測超標已涉犯公共危險罪，民眾這才坦白他剛因酒駕服刑出獄，這次超標等於是第6度酒駕。

高雄市警彌陀分駐所長洪子棠表示：「駕駛人10年內第2次酒駕者將加重罰鍰，機車駕駛處最高額新台幣9萬元，汽車駕駛處最高額新台幣12萬元，若是第3次以上的酒駕，則依前次所處罰的金額，再加罰新台幣9萬元並吊銷駕照。」

警方提醒，酒駕3次以上不只加重罰鍰及吊銷駕照，還會被公布姓名、照片及違法事實。但不只汽機車才算酒駕，腳踏車同樣違規。

民眾說：「因為我騎腳踏車，（以為）喝酒騎腳踏車沒關係。」警方則回：「沒有，不行。」

警方表示，酒後騎腳踏車雖不涉公共危險罪，但仍可依道交法開罰600至1200元，提醒民眾不要違規，以免傷荷包。
