Pelosi Refuses to Discuss Taiwan Travel Plans 美眾院議長拒談出訪 但稱展現挺台重要

U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked whether she would visit Taiwan in August. Although she refused to answer the question, she emphasized the importance of showing support for Taiwan. Additionally, Taiwan Representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim participated in a meeting with the U.S. House of Representatives' China Task Force.

U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to answer questions about her visit plan. The media revealed that she will visit Taiwan in August. President Biden said that the U.S. military believes that a visit now by Pelosi is not a good idea. China has strongly protested and does not rule out military action. Pelosi emphasized her support for Taiwan in the face of threats.

Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Speaker of the House: “I think it's important for us to show support for Taiwan. Maybe the military was afraid our plane would get shot down or something like that by China. I don't know exactly. I didn't see it. I didn't hear it.”

Pelosi also pointed out that no one has mentioned Taiwan independence, and it is up to Taiwan to decide. Recently, China has been questioning the U.S.' one-China policy. State Department spokesperson Ned Price reiterated that it has not changed.

Ned Price, U.S. State Department Spokesperson: “We don't have, as you know, diplomatic relations with Taiwan or support Taiwan independence but we have a robust unofficial relationship.”

The situation in the Taiwan Strait is tense. The U.S. House of Representatives' China Task Force invited Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's representative to the U.S., to a meeting on the 20th. She urged them to speed up arms sales to Taiwan, and make every effort not to repeat the mistakes of Ukraine.

Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's Representative to the U.S.: “So I want to thank you for these recommendations. And the steadfast bipartisan support for Taiwan.”

This is also the first time that Hsiao has participated in a public event in Congress since she served as Taiwan's Representative to the U.S. for more than two years. Many lawmakers expressed their concerns about China's military threat, emphasizing that supporting Taiwan is the right thing and in the best interests of the U.S..

「我從不談論我的出訪計畫，這是一個國家安全問題。」拒絕回答出訪計畫，美國眾議院議長裴洛西被媒體披露8月即將訪台，總統拜登表示美國軍方認為現在不是好主意，中國更是強烈抗議，不排除祭出軍事行動，面對威脅裴洛西則強調挺台立場。

美國眾議院議長裴洛西回應：「我覺得展現對台灣的支持十分重要，或許軍方擔憂我的飛機會遭中方擊落或類似的事情，我不知道具體情況，沒看到也沒聽說。」

裴洛西也指出，沒有人提到台灣獨立，這要由台灣決定。近來中國不斷質疑美國一中政策，國務院發言人普萊斯則重申沒有改變。

美國國務院發言人普萊斯表示：「我們和台灣沒有外交關係，也不支持台灣獨立，但美台享有強健的非官方關係。」

台海局勢緊張，美國眾議院中國工作小組，20日邀請駐美代表蕭美琴召開圓桌會議，力促加快對台軍售，盡一切努力，不能重蹈烏克蘭的錯誤。

美國眾議院中國工作小組主席麥考爾指出：「我們必須現在就武裝台灣，我3年前簽屬了對台軍售，到現在還尚未交付。」

駐美代表蕭美琴回應：「我要感謝這些建議，還有兩黨對台灣的堅定支持。」

這也是蕭美琴擔任駐美代表兩年多以來，首次在國會參加公開活動，多位議員們表達對中國軍事威脅的擔憂，強調支持台灣是一件正確的事，也符合美國最大利益。
