First T-5 Brave Eagle Goes on Maiden Flight|新式高教機"勇鷹"今首飛 總統親校閱

Taiwan's first self-manufactured AIDC T-5 Brave Eagle advanced jet trainer went on its maiden flight with President Tsai Ing-wen to oversee the operation. Let's take a look.

The maiden flight of Taiwan's first self-produced advanced jet trainer, the AIDC T-5 Brave Eagle, took place on the 22nd with President Tsai Ing-wen watching. The Brave Eagle was designed as a replacement for AT-3 and F-5 jet trainers and the government recently modified its "Three Stages, Three Jets" training program to "Three Stages, Two Jets."

With the full-on cooperation of the Air Force, AIDC, National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, and all the upstream and downstream vendors over a four-year period, we were able to overcome all of the obstacles and are now using concrete achievements to reconstruct the confidence of our society and various arenas in our domestic aerospace industry's research and development capabilities.

Production on the Brave Eagle began in 2017 and the first aircraft rolled off the production line in September 2019. Taiwan's last domestically produced aircraft was the IDF combat aircraft 31 years ago. The Brave Eagle features many electronic components and hardware that were not available 31 years ago, and is therefore a testament to how far Taiwan's aerospace industry has advanced. The new jet trainer has uses for both times of peace and war.

I believe the president is proud of and happy with this aircraft too.

For any country, the ability to produce your own aircraft and the birth of a new military aircraft is cause for celebration.

It could be said the Brave Eagle is the world's most advanced 5th-generation jet trainer. A second aircraft will undergo certification testing soon. The government hopes the Brave Eagle will have useful life of 30 years and 8,000 hours and says six more aircraft will be "mass-produced" this year. The Air Force is taking a more conservative stance, saying the project is currently on schedule and small-batch production may start in November 2021.
