With the China-US trade war continuing and Google ending its cooperation with Huawei, domestic telecommunications providers Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile have announced they will no longer sell new Huawei products. Fareastone, Asia Pacific Telecom and Taiwan Star Telecom, meanwhile, have decided that they will continue selling the imported existing models but after these sell out they will not import any new ones.
In the wake of Google announcing its Huawei ban, domestic telecoms Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile have announced they will stop selling new Huawei models. Fareastone, Asia Pacific Telecom and Taiwan Star Telecom, meanwhile, will continue selling existing models but will not order new ones once the existing supply sells out.
Without Google Play and Google Maps and other related services, we probably will stop selling new Huawei models. However, we still have to finish selling older models already in stock.
Huawei expanded into the Taiwan market with virtual and brick and mortar stores last year and currently ranks fourth in the Taiwanese market with market share of close to 9 percent. Seventy percent of Huawei phones are sold through telecoms and the remaining 30 percent through Huawei itself or retail stores.
Huawei actually isn't bad. Their cameras are really good. It's kind of a pity (to stop selling their phones).
If (Huawei and Google) sever their relationship and they each launch new systems, their market shares may fall around 10 percent.
With the China-US trade war escalating, the TAIEX plunged over 160 points on the 23rd. The Huawei supply chain suffered the most, with TSMC's market value falling below NT$6 trillion.
We are the primary mobile phone and network equipment supply chain, so our companies may experience a bit of chaos in the market in the short term. In the long term, however, we have all the foundries so orders will still make their way here.
Shen Jong-chin says Taiwan is a world leader in semiconductors and orders will return to Taiwan's industrial chain because all brands have to go through Taiwan.
