Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chou Chun-mi wrote on Facebook that she is worried that the new two-year license revoking penalty for drunk driving will affect the lives and jobs of those that are penalized. Following the controversy caused by this statement, Chou explained that there is inadequate public transportation in remote townships and many depend on their scooters to make a living, so she was just hoping that there are different ways to process drunk driving cases with different circumstances.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chou Chun-mi has come under fire from netizens after saying on Facebook that people's lives and jobs would be affected if their license is revoked for two years for drunk driving.
The opportunity offered by the drunk driving (revisions) is for everyone to hear the voices of remote townships and different opinions. So, even though I am at the forefront, I am still very grateful for this kind of opportunity.
In response to the hailstorm, Chou said she respects online voices and she would face the criticism with humility and accept it with courage. At the same time, she defended her position, saying public transportation is lacking in remote areas and many people depend on their scooters to take them to and from work. She also said scooters and cars should be treated differently. New Power Party lawmaker Huang Kuo-chang and others slept at the Legislative Yuan on the 21st to call for drunk driving revisions to be given top priority on the legislative agenda for the 22nd. The revisions have been dragging their way through the legislature for two years now.
Our goal was very clear when the agenda was being set yesterday. Society wants and expects us to pass the drunk driving prevention bill as quickly as possible.
Everyone has the right to express their own opinion at the legislature. However, those in charge also have to listen to the voices of minority and opposition parties.
The Kuomintang, People First Party and New Power Party caucuses all signed on, successfully moving the revisions to first on the agenda.
