Trade tensions between the US and China are growing. The U.S. has announced 1,300 Chinese products they will put a 25 percent tariff on. This includes medical, telecom, satellite and aerospace products. China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization and says it will announce similar tariffs on U.S. goods.
The U.S. has released a list of 1,300 Chinese products it plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on in the future. The list includes medical, aerospace, telecom satellite, semiconductor, and consumer electronic products. Although the list still requires approval, China has already announced it will respond in kind.
If someone wants to start (a trade war) and bring it to our doorstep, we'll battle to the end. The U.S. has a list. China will have a list too.
Last month, the U.S. announced a tariff on steel imports. China responded by announcing tariffs on 128 U.S. products. According to media reports, China's tariffs are already affecting the U.S. agricultural sector as well as global trade. Asked about the latest tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump said relations with China are excellent but trade issues must be resolved.
We can't have a US$500 billion-a-year trade deficit. We also have the theft of intellectual property and that probably is in the neighborhood of US$200-300 billion a year.
Japan says retaliatory tariffs don't help anyone and it hopes the World Trade Organization can mediate. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet with Trump on the 17th and ask Trump to respect global trade and free trade systems.
