NUCLEAR WASTE MAY BE STORED ON UNINHABITED ISLANDS| 核廢料何處去? 傳鎖定四縣市無人島

Last year, Taipower proposed to begin storing nuclear waste on unpopulated islands, and it is rumored that a few locations in 4 counties, namely Kinmen, Lienchiang, Penghu, and Keelung have been considered for this purpose. While the Ministry of Economic Affairs stressed that Taipower has yet to name any specific site, governments of those 4 counties have all voiced strong objections. After Taipower proposed a plan to build a centralized storage facility for nuclear waste on an unpopulated island, it is said that the company has selected uninhabited islands in Kinmen, Lienchiang, Penghu, and Keelung for this purpose. We did not see Taipower make any suggestions for candidate sites in their report. After storing its low-level solidified nuclear waste on Orchid Island for 35 years, Taipower is planning to remove the island's nuclear waste to an unpopulated island. Nuclear waste from the first, second, and third nuclear power plants will also be carried by three specifically-designed ships to the selected site. ==LIN TE-FU Taipower Spokesperson == If we select a bay, unpopulated island, or semi-unpopulated island, we'll need ships to carry the waste. The ships must be specifically designed. When asked about their views on the site issue, all four candidate sites voiced their objection. ==LIN YU-CHANG Keelung City Mayor== Keelung is a significant landmark in Taiwan. The three northern islands are important fishing zones. I don't see why Taipower would even consider Keelung as its nuclear disposal site. The four sites are completely not suitable. == SU WEN-CHANG Penghu County Spokesperson== This is definitely off the table. If Taipower wants to list us as a candidate site, they will gain no ground. Kinmen Magistrate Chen Fu-hai stated that the central government only thought about Kinmen at times like this. He will never accept the proposal. Lienchiang County said Taipower did not make any contact with them. It will continue to develop a sustainable tourism industry.
