First in today's international news, severe weather events wreaked havoc in Peru and several American states over the span of the past few days. Days of intense rain in northern Peru have left 25 dead and 39 hurt, as flood waters devastate towns without proper drainage systems and overwhelmed cemeteries.
Peruvian President Kuczynski has declared a state of emergency for 3 coastal regions. On Tuesday, residents continued to work through knee-high waters, trying to salvage what was left of their belongings. A total of 34,239 people have been affected, according to officials. Meanwhile up in the United States, 6 tornadoes tore through New Orleans and Louisiana, injuring at least 40 people as the storm roared across highways and streets. A state of emergency has been declared throughout Louisiana, while search and rescue teams searched for survivors. Moving westward, a storm in California triggered street flooding and rockslides on Tuesday around the Bay Area. In the state capital, the Sacramento River was expected to swell to just a few feet below flood stage. Meantime, rainfall in Los Angeles since October has exceeded the normal amount for an entire year, hitting about 400 millimeters.
