As awareness of drunk-driving accidents has increased, the demand for designated driver services is growing. But it was found that only 30% of the drivers on a designated driver service have professional licenses. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications says that drivers could receive a fine up to NT$3,600 for providing paid services without a professional license. A designated driver prepares to drive his customer home. As drunk-driving accidents have become prominent in the news, more people are calling designated drivers after drinking to drive them home. In response to this new demand, Taiwan Designated Driver began offering designated driver matchmaking services through an app this June. But it has been discovered that nearly 70% of their contracted drivers are not professionally licensed. As the government prepares to issue fines, the drivers are taking the opportunity to get their licenses. ==HUANG PO-WEI Driver, Taiwan Designated Driver== I'm currently not (licensed). I'll be getting a license as soon as possible. The Ministry of Transportation and Communication says that anyone who charges a fee for driving services must be professionally licensed, or face a fine between NT$1800 and NT$3600. Designated driver app developer ZealMass says that it will assist its 250 contracted drivers to obtain professional licenses by the end of March. ==LIU TZU-CHUANG General Manager, ZealMass== By the end of March, all designated drivers on our network will have professional licenses. We hope that the government can give us a little bit more time and latitude in terms of regulations, and more space to innovate. That way we'll be able to do more for developing the industry in Taiwan. The company says that nearly 700,000 people use designated driver services every day in Korea, and nearly 1.5 million in China. In Taiwan, the service has seen a 15-fold increase in users since June. The company is betting on even higher demand in the future.
