26 percent of Taipei city prone to liquefaction / 北市公布土壤液化潛勢 26%中高潛勢區　　　　　　　　　　

The Taipei City government published a database showing the potential of soil liquefaction in different areas in Taipei. Around 26.1% of the land in Taipei is marked having medium or high vulnerability to soil liquefection. However, the city government said that's no reason for concern since soil liquefaction does not result in immediate risks. With the published information, residnets can have a better understanding of their living environment. For older buildings in need of reinforcement, residents can apply for city government's subsidy of up to NT$300,000. In Feb. the Weiguan apartment building in Tainan collapsed in an earthquake, and the incident raised public awareness about soil liquefaction risks in Taiwan. The Taipei City government released an online database showing areas that are prone to soil liquefaction in Taipei. Based on soil samples collected from 3,060 drill holes in public construction sites and residential areas and using a scale of 1:5000, the map shows that around 26.1% of the land in Taipei is categorized as highly susceptible to soil liquefaction. ==CHARLES LIN Taipei City Deputy Mayor== 26.1% of the land in Taipei is marked as medium or high susceptibility areas. Over 50% or 60% of the land has a low probability for soil liquefaction. People can type in their address to see the measurement of their area on the map. However, there is no need to panic, even if they live in a highly prone area, since soil liquefation will not cause any immediate harm. Residents can also apply for a city government subsidy if their building needs reinforcement or improvement. ==PENG CHENG-SHEN, Commissioner, Taipei Public Works Department== If the initial evaluation is ok, it means the structure of your building is safe. Its main structure will not break in case of tilting or subsidence. According to the database, the Taipei 101 building is located in a high-potential liquefaction area. Areas along the MRT Wen Hu Line between the Technology Building and Linguang Stations are marked as having medium to high suscetibility, but the Taipei Public Works Department stressed that public construction projects are all designed to withstand earthquakes and are free of safety concerns. The Taipei Dome, which is still under construction, has a low ptential for soil liquefaction.
