Digital board game stimulates memory / 數位桌遊"懷舊治療" 陪長者動腦復健

As the Taiwanese population continues to age, elderly care has become a critical issue. In today's Vital Taiwan, we want to introduce you to a digital board game called "Memory Monopoly", and show you how two designers took it upon themselves to help improve care for the elderly in Taiwan. At a care center, several elders gather around a touch screen and seem to be having a really good time. What has brought them together is a newly designed board game. ==CHENG YA-FANG, designer== The design of the game is entirely according to occupational therapy practice. At the beginning, there's a reality check to remind the elders the date today. The maximum number of player is five, and there will be a dice for them to roll. Memory Monopoly is the work of designers Cheng Ya-fang and Cho Su-yang. It first started as a graduation project, but in recent years, the game has matured into a comprehensive service that addresses what's currently lacking in Taiwan's elderly care. ==CHENG YA-FANG, designer== Memory Monopoly is a comprehensive tool for elderly rehabilitation. Our aim is to provide something the elders would really identify with, something that provides great results, and something that makes the elders smile. Currently, the lack of assentive devices in Taiwan means most of them are imported. As a result, many devices are unable to strike a chord in the elders' heart as they cater to other cultures. Cheng and Cho saw this problem and sought to fix it by combining information technology and reminiscence therapy. To provide customized experience, information about participants is gathered prior to the game. Every roll of the dice and every step taken lead to a simple activity that helps the elders relive precious memories. It could be an old photograph, or a golden oldie from the good old times. As stories get told, therapeutic effects are felt. ==CHENG YA-FANG, designer== They all respond very well to the game. For instance, some of them used to be quiet and restrained, but when they see photos of themselves, they open up and start telling stories that not even their kids have heard before. For elders with dementia, daily life could feel like a string of frustrations, but memories of the good old days often remain intact. As such, reminiscing the past gives them better mood and rebuilds confidence. In fact, to Cheng, the word "design" comes with great responsibility. ==CHENG YA-FANG,designer== I studied product design in college, so I mainly designed consumer products, but then I read Design for the Real World and realized that designers too have social responsibilities, and I decided to design for elders with dementia. Tang Hsien-Hui, a professor who introduced the book to Cheng, likewise thinks that design isn't just for the rich. ==TANG HSIEN-HUI, Assoc. Prof., Ntl. Taiwan Uni. of Sci. Tech.== In Taiwan or perhaps the whole world, most designers design for the richest 10%, while many problems are left unsolved. There is much more a designer could do, for example, make Taiwan a better place by identifying problems and fixing them. For mankind, storytelling is a gift from mother nature. Through Memory Monopoly, stories of a life time are told and shared. Cheng and Cho have tasked themselves with the mission of designing for the real world, and in the process, they have brought joy and laughter to many. REPORTER:JEFF CHANG 臺灣邁入高齡社會,如何老吾老以及人之老, 是越來越重要的課題。設計師鄭雅方和他的夥伴,設計了一款專為老年人打造的遊戲"回憶錄大富翁",希望透過數位桌遊的方式,陪長者動動腦,重溫人生中,點滴美好回憶。 照護中心裡,幾位長者圍著觸控式螢幕,笑得不亦樂乎,讓人不禁好奇,究竟螢幕上是什麼樣的遊戲,讓長輩們如此開懷。 ==設計師 鄭雅方== 他整個遊戲的設計就是按照 職能治療師他們帶活動的流程 所以一開始會有一個現實導向 讓長輩知道說今天幾月幾號 最多可以有五位長輩參加 治療師會給他們一個骰子 讓他們去丟骰子 【回憶錄大富翁】是互動設計師鄭雅方和卓思揚的心血結晶,從一開始工業設計系的畢業製作出發,如今已經成為完整的一套服務流程,希望彌補臺灣長照的不足。 ==設計師 鄭雅方== "回憶錄大富翁"其實對長輩來說 是非常多元的復健工具 非常希望可以是一套 可以引起長輩共鳴 可以看出復健效果 甚至是可以讓長輩 在這一小時有限的時間中 可以非常開心的一套教具 台灣目前的長者輔具,數量稀少,仰賴進口,與老人家生活經驗並不符合,再加上常見的紙牌形式有其侷限,設計團隊看見問題,著手改善,融合資訊科技與懷舊治療,開發出這套【回憶錄大富翁】。 遊戲前,團隊先透過家屬,深入了解長者的生活樣貌,打造客製體驗。擲骰子,走步數,每站關卡,都是不同回憶:看老照片分享往事,高歌年少定情曲,加上益智問答,讓長輩動動腦,打開心胸說故事。 ==設計師 鄭雅方== 每一位長輩他們的反應 大部份是非常非常好的 有一些他們可能以前都是在中心 比較低調 不活躍 在活動中他們會因為 看到自己的照片 而變得非常的開朗 講一些甚至是他們的子女 都沒有聽過的故事 對失智長者來說,日常生活不免挫折,但舊日回憶卻依然鮮明,透過懷舊治療,既能改善情緒,也重建自信。事實上,在雅方心中,設計兩個字,是一種社會使命。 ==設計師 鄭雅方== 在大學階段 接受的是產品設計系的教育 比較常做的是一些消費性的產品 讀了一本書叫為真實世界設計 裡面提到說 其實設計師也是有社會責任的 就決定要去為失智長輩 做一些設計 當初開書單給雅方與思揚的唐玄輝教授,也認為設計不應只是為富人做嫁。 ==台科大設計系副教授 唐玄輝== 現在台灣或者甚者全世界 大部份的設計師都在幫 最有錢的百分之十的人做設計 但還是有很多問題沒有得到滿足 還有很多事是設計師可以做的 能夠去思考台灣面臨什麼問題 把設計的力量用來改善台灣 說故事是人類與生俱來的能力,【回憶錄大富翁】讓長者打開心胸,侃侃而談,訴說積累一生的故事。爲真實世界設計,是兩位設計師的使命,也期盼更多人捲起袖子,用設計帶給更多人感動與溫暖。 記者 張家福 劉漢麟 採訪報導
