Deputy Interior Minister Hua Ching-chun Tests Positive

Deputy Interior Minister Hua Ching-chun tested positive after doing a rapid test, and had to take a leave of absence from a scheduled meeting.Staff cleaned the seats with rubbing alcohol at the Legislative Yuan. Deputy Interior Minister Chiu Chang-yueh had to replace Deputy Interior Minister Hua Ching-chun in attending a legislative meeting on the 12th reviewing amendments to the Rental Housing Market Development and Regulation Act.The Ministry of the Interior (MOI) has confirmed that Deputy Minister Hua tested positive for COVID-19, so he had to call off attending recent work meetings and activities. Hua is currently feeling fine. Hua had just been interpolated at the Legislative Yuan a day before over issues on the Transitional Justice Commission by the end of May. The MOI admits that relocating and removing the statues of former President Chiang Kai-shek and former President Chiang Ching-kuo is a tricky issue. Nearly 70 percent of the former presidents' statues are currently waiting to be handled. Chiu Chang-yuen, Administrative Deputy Minister, Ministry of the Interior: “Of course, there's pressure in dealing with the statutes because it has to do with ideologies and value judgments. I think there needs to be more public discourse. Right now public opinion in Taiwan is at two ends of the scale. I think we need more communication to get close to some consensus.”The MOI said they will continue to talk with different parties and to hear different voices. The removal of historical sites with symbols of Taiwan's authoritarian rule is another important issue of discussion.
