A group of people from all walks of life in Hsinchu decided to form a team called "Sea Scooping" to help maintain the oceanic environment. The team includes engineers, teachers, make-up artists and civil servants, and they have since removed around 200 kg of waste from the ocean.
The scuba divers that are removing fishing nets from the seabed are a team of 15 people from all walks of life in Hsinchu that are dedicated to protect the oceanic environment. Whenever they have time, they will gear up with cleaning tools and air tanks that weigh 20 kgs and dive under the ocean to remove garbage that has been left on the ocean floor.
The one time that I remember particularly well, was that there was a scooter in the sea near Nanliao. The skeleton of a scooter and a huge fishing net that we couldn't lift manually. We had to use a tow truck, where we had dived under to attach the hook on first.
Some reefs at the bottom…as some fishermen will drop fishing nets, and due to sea currents, the nets will entangle on the reefs rocks.
After seeing the oceanic environment been gradually destroyed with discarded fishing nets and bottles, the team decided to dedicate themselves to help clean up the ocean floor in order to help protect the ocean.
Now that there's some education and promotion (on not littering), there's fewer garbage. What we see are almost always things that have been left behind before, or carried over from other outer areas of the ocean.
If these things at the bottom of the ocean are not removed, these nets in the ocean will act like murder weapons (to the marine life), as many fish will be trapped in the nets. Following the cleanups, the effect has been great - we can see that many fishes have returned.
The Bureau of Environmental Protection Hsinchu expressed gratitude towards this selfless team, and reminded the public that the best way to protect the ocean is to not allow rubbish to enter the ocean in the first place by not littering.
潛水員正在海底清除廢棄漁網，這群來自新竹各行各業的人，為了守護海洋環境，組成總共15人的團隊，只要一有時間就會背起，重20公斤的空氣瓶及清除垃圾的裝備，下海執行清除海底垃圾的「超級任務」。
"海底撈"成員 孫國基表示：「印象比較深的，有摩托車就在南寮近海那邊，有一台摩托車的骨架，還有大漁網，那個大漁網是我們人拉不起來的，那後來動用拖吊車，拖吊車來我們再下去綁鉤。」
"海底撈"成員 楊錦樹表示：「底下的一些礁石，一些漁民放那個漁網下去，有時候都是海流的關係，都會纏繞在岩石上面。」
成員感嘆近年來看到海底環境已經逐漸被廢棄漁網和瓶罐垃圾破壞，因此決心投入海底垃圾清除工作，為守護這片海洋做努力。
"海底撈"成員 莊景聰表示：「現在社會在宣導(垃圾)有比較少了，我們看到幾乎都是，可能是前陣子去遺留的，甚至是外區域流到我們本土區域來的。」
新竹市環保局副局長 洪明仕表示：「如果這個海底的東西，沒有被清出來，這些網具會在海裡面，當做一個兇器一樣，很多的魚都會被網住，那這清理之後效果很好，就是發現很多的魚群，都已經陸續回來了。」
環保局表示很感謝這群人的無私付出，並呼籲守護海洋最好的方法，就是不要把垃圾流入海裡，不要亂丟垃圾，才能守護海洋生態。
