Terry Gou Drops Presidential Bid|2020大選震撼彈 郭台銘昨夜宣布"不選"

Foxconn Group founder Terry Gou withdrew from the Kuomintang prior to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and was expected to announce his presidential bid after the holiday. On Sept. 16 at around 11 p.m., Guo unexpectedly announced that he will not run in 2020, sending shock waves through the political community. Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je said he respects Gou's decision.

After reflecting on this issue for a period of time, I would like to announce that I will not take part in the 2020 presidential election.

On Sept. 12, Foxconn Group founder Terry Gou withdrew from the Kuomintang, intensifying speculation that he was set to launch a presidential bid following the Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend. On Sept. 16, one day before the deadline for registration to collect signatures to run in the 2020 presidential election, Gou announced he will not run for president after carefully thinking the issue over. He also said he wasn't influenced or persuaded by anyone. Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je, who had supported Gou's presidential aspirations and was making preparations to help him collect the required signatures for his candidacy, said he respects Gou's decision and will maintain a collaborative relationship. When asked if he will run now that Gou is not running, Ko responded it will be too much of a rush.

If he had announced this one month ago, then we would have had time to prepare. Instead, he announced it now. We would have to find a vice president… it would be too much of a rush. How do you take this into consideration?

When asked if he will seek the support of another political party before Nov. 22, Ko responded that this is another issue. Meanwhile, the People First Party, which can directly nominate a presidential candidate, has not yet announced whether it will in fact present a candidate. This may give it room to collaborate with another party.

Politics is not about sharing the gains, and the People First Party will not sell out. We will only fight for justice for Taiwan together with kindred spirits.

We fully respect his (Gou) decision not to register. Life is like a game of chess, it's unpredictable. I will continue to go with the flow.

Former Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng has made no secret of his presidential ambitions, and there remains the possibility that Wang will team up with the PFP. The party said it is willing to work with kindred spirits. It is still in the preparatory stage and no one has yet asked the party to run on its ticket.
