The young lady is smiling happily as she receives an award. She is Su Hsuan-Hua, a fourth grader from Yunlin County's Nanyang Elementary School. She was diagnosed with Leukemia four years ago, and has been in and out of hospital for chemotherapy treatment since. She said that she misses school the most during this treatment period.
I have been unable to go to school. I love school, but I've been spending more time at the hospital than at school.
We believe we should share our experience on dealing with the tough times with others in order to inspire them and give them hope.
Su's father said that he is a unicycle coach and has been training her daughter since she was small. He said that her daughter has remained positive and studied hard during the last years of battling with the disease. The school also believes Su serves as a fine example for other students.
She could only attend two classes per day before her mother picks her up. But she loves school and she makes an effort to be here whenever she can.
Su's teacher said that Su also performs magic tricks she learnt from her dad to entertain her classmates as well as to break down any barriers or misunderstandings. The teacher said that her story of successfully defeating cancer has inspired many around her.
