PUBLIC PROPOSAL TO REMOVE TWO-STAGE LEFT-TURN REGULATION|

According to the current traffic regulations, when making a left turn at crossroads, motorcycles have to make a two-stage left turn. However, some people believe it is dangerous. In March, a proposal was made at the National Development Council's "Public Policy Online Participation Platform", hoping to remove the two-stage left-trun regulation. So far, 1,800 people have endorsed the proposal. Currently, if you ride a motorcycle and want to make a left turn, you'll need to ride across the road and wait in the two-stage left turn waiting zone. However, some people propose to terminate this regulation. No matter if you drive a car or ride a motorcycle, you must stay in the left lane if you want to make a left turn; similarly, stay on the right if you are making a right turn. This is to avoid accidents happening in the waiting zone. Over 1,800 people seconded this proposal within half a month. ==MR. CHANG, motorist== It's dangerous if you ride directly across, unless the traffic lights have a filter signal, to let you know the traffic order ==MISS CHEN, motorist== If it is in the countryside, I feel two-stage left turns…there are not many vehicles. So if you eliminate two-stage left turns under such circumstances, I think it's OK. According to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, in Taiwan there are 91.5 motorcycles for every 100 people. This is a new high record for the past 33 months. The number of motorcycles in Taiwan exceeded 13 million. Many motorists do not follow traffic regulations and create dangers. The Ministry explains, two-stage left turns are for the sake of public safety. ==CHAO CHIN-WEI Motor Vehicles Sec. Chief, DORH, MOTC== If there were no relevant signs or two-stage left turns sign posted… if there were none and the inner lane prohibited motorcycles, you need to make two-stage left turns. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications emphasized, they will discuss two-stage left turns at a meeting this month. Some drivers and motorists said, at major cross roads in Taipei, cars and motorcycles make left turns at same time, that would be scary. TRANSLATED BY:ANTHONY LIN
