TAIPEI CITY OFFICIAL RELEASED ON BAIL IN BRIBERY INVESTIGATION|建商涉行賄案 北市都發局1官交保1遭押

A property developer has been accused of bribing government officials in exchange for receiving contracts to build several major projects in northern Taiwan. After two waves of investigations and summoning 5 people for questioning, an engineer surnamed Tai has been detained. This Senior Executive Officer at Taipei City's Department of Urban Development is suspected of involvement in the Ching Tsuan Construction bribery case. After a night of questioning on the 14th, he was released on bail. An engineer with Taipei's Construction Management Office was also questioned. Though he denied involvement, an intermediary for the bribes admitted to handling payments of over NT$100,000 per project facilitated. The prosecution believed the engineer to be heavily involved and requested to keep him in custody, a request the courts granted. ==LIAN YU-CHIUN Chief Judge, New Taipei District Administrative Court== The defendant is suspected of major violations of the Anti-Corruption Act, violations which carry a minimum 5-year sentence. The defendant also has a high degree of experience and is likely to flee. He is also a high-level risk to collude with other defendants and witnesses to provide false testimony. The prosecutors for this case first discovered that Ching Tsuan Construction proprietor Lee Chia-hsiang had suspicious monetary dealings with Wang Sheng-wen, who was then New Taipei Deputy Director-General of Land Administration. They suspected the developer of bribing officials in exchange for development projects. After they searched Wang Sheng-wen's home on February 21st, Wang committed suicide the same night leaving a note protesting his innocence. The prosecutors then discovered that a contractor with Ching Tsuan bribed two Taipei City officials for a construction license in Neihu. The two officials and three people involved with the company were taken in for questioning.
