VEGETABLE PRICES DROP AFTER REPLANTING AND HARVEST|

Continuous typhoons and persistent rainfall have caused vegetable prices to soar this year. However, there has been a decline in vegetable prices after the harvest season of a new crop cycle arrived. For example, a cabbage costs NT $11 per Taiwanese catty in its place of origin and the retail price only goes up to $15 to $20 NTD, which is four times cheaper than before. Vegetable farmers are worried about a crash in vegetable prices. Vegetables are now much cheaper than a few months ago. ==CONSUMER== Vegetables like water spinach and cabbage are cheaper than before. Last week, a cabbage is about NT$40 per Taiwanese catty. But now it is only half the price, NT$20 per Taiwanese catty. Consumers are happy to see a decrease in vegetable prices. Leaf vegetables dropped from NT$60 to NT$20, and scallion dropped from NT$140 to NT$70 per Taiwanese catty. Cabbage, which is often used as Taiwan's vegetable price index, dropped from NT$80 to NT$20 per Taiwanese catty. Vegetable prices plunging over 50 percent has made it hard for vegetable sellers to earn money. ==VEGETABLE SELLER== (How is your business?) It has been difficult recently. (How come?) Nobody comes to buy vegetables now. ==VEGETABLE SELLER== The price of agricultural products varies a great deal. It rises and falls all the time. Only rootstock vegetables, such as carrot, remains rather high in prices. Vegetable prices reached a peak during the typhoon season a few months ago. However, there has been a sharp drop in vegetable prices recently. A Chinese cabbage now costs less than NT$10. ==VEGETABLE TRADER== A lot of vegetables are already in season. Vegetable prices have become stable. Large-scale replanting and stable weather have helped vegetables grow well. Worrying that the vegetable price will collapse, a lot of farmers are now harvesting their vegetables. However, an increase in supply may even worsen the situation. Therefore, they hope that the government can limit supply through volume controls because falling vegetable prices will have a negative impact on their livelihoods. TRANSLATED BY:ARIEL HSIEH
