WORLD LEADERS CALL ON TRUMP TO ABIDE BY PARIS AGREEMENT|聯合國氣候大會 各國盼川普履行巴黎協定

The election of Donald Trump has brought uncertainties not just in the Middle East, but also in global anti-climate change efforts. The first UN climate summit after the Paris agreement is currently being held in Morocco. And on November 15th, at a head of state forum, leaders from around the world called on Donald Trump to abide by the agreement and not to withdraw US involvement. Similarly, more than 360 mainly American business leaders and investors urged Trump in an open letter to honor America's climate commitments. The annual climate forum on the 15th was declared opened jointly by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, as well as French President Francois Hollande. As around 60 heads of state and government took the podium to address the assembly, concerns were widely voiced regarding Trump's campaign rhetoric that climate change is only but a hoax, as well as his promise to cancel billions of dollars in anti-climate change funding and to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. In particular, Ban called on Trump to recognize the reality that climate change is a global problem of pressing urgency. ==BAN KI-MOON, UN SECRETARY GENERAL== As I said earlier, (what was) once seemed to be unthinkable, has now become unstoppable. ==FRANCOIS HOLLANDE, French President== But we must say that the Paris Agreement is irreversible. Our consensus was not just historical, but has now become irreversible. The agreement mandates the obligations of all signatories that cannot be changed arbitrarily. Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande stressed that actions taken to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels are paramount to maintaining global security and stability. The Paris Agreement was passed by 195 countries on December 12th at UN COP21 to replace the Kyoto Protocol. To date, more than 100 countries, including the world's top two carbon emitters China and the US, have ratified the agreement. The fine prints and action plans of the Agreement are expected to be finalized at this year's climate talks in Morocco.
