In the early morning of November 8, a massive sinkhole appeared near a downtown train station in Japan's southern city of Fukuoka. The local authority suspects a nearby subway extension project as the culprit. All occupants in nearby buildings have been evacuated.
A five-lane road to the Hakata Train Station in Fukuoka suddenly collapsed and created two large sinkholes. The traffic lights had sunk as well.
==RESIDENT==
There were two large sinkholes and the sinkholes were continually expanding. It was scary to see the traffic lights fell, you felt that you got nowhere to run.
The incident occurred around 5 in the morning, nearby buildings and residents had a power outage and water disruption. The massive sinkhole continued expanding for two to three hours, and measured 15 meters long and 20 meters wide. The Fukuoka City Traffic Service Management Department had stated the Nanakuma Subway extension project began in 2014. In October of that year, water pipeline installation caused the road collapsed for the first time. The authority had suspected the same cause for the collapsing. Workers said they had already tried to avoid water pipelines, maybe the on-going construction accidentally shifted underground water layer, and caused the road collapsed. The authorities had blockaded the intersection, terminated gas supply, and evacuated occupants from the nearby buildings.
