SEVERE SUBSIDENCE IN YUNLIN RELATED TO WATER TABLE|雲林地層下陷擴大 土庫7.1公分最嚴重

In some parts of Taiwan, land subsidence is a serious issue, and it's getting worse each year, with effected areas expanding fast. In Yunlin's Tuku Township, where the problem is the most serious, the land has sunk by more than 7cm. In response, the government is stepping up inspections on illegal undergound water withdrawal and keeping people from drilling new wells. The roof of this house is the same height as an adult, if you want to go into the house, you need to bend down. Many houses in Yunlin County are like this, due to severe land subsidence. ==RESIDENT Yunlin County== I can touch it, my head is up to the roof. You see, my head is up to the roof. ==RESIDENT Yunlin County== No one lives in these old houses, they moved out to the houses on main roads. The Water Resources Agency and National Cheng Kung University cooperated in analyzing the subsidence rates in Yunlin County. They found the average land subsidence rate in 16 townships was three centimeters from 2014 to 2015. That is 80% of land in Yunlin County. Especially in Tuku Township, the land subsidence rate is 7.1 centimeters, it is the most serious in Taiwan. ==HSU HONG-PO, Dir. If there is not much rain, underground water is less and users continue to withdraw, then it made land subsidence. The situation is getting more serious. The area of land subsidence of Yunlin County is getting larger. Last year the total area of land subsidence was 658 square kilometers, this accounts for over half of whole county. The Water Resource Department continues to inspect illegal underground water withdrawal, and denies all applications for digging new wells in 14 restricted townships.
