Taiwan Issue Mitigated if US, China Reconcile: Scholar
The 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party has ended. On Oct. 26, U.S. President Joe Biden said the U.S. is not seeking conflict with China. Scholars said the key to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations will be the stabilization of the U.S.-China relationship.
The 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party has ended. On Oct. 26, U.S. President Joe Biden said during a meeting with U.S. Department of Defense leaders that the U.S. is not seeking conflict with China and he has repeatedly made this point clear to Xi Jinping. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that China is speeding up the reunification process and is no longer accepting the status quo.
Joe Biden, US President: “We also have to be, to responsibly manage increasingly intense competition with China. You know, we have to maintain a military advantage, but we're making it clear that we don't seek conflict. We don't seek conflict. I told him that we're looking for competition. There'll be stiff competition, but not there doesn't need to be conflict.”
Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State: “The decision by the government in Beijing that the status quo was no longer acceptable, that they wanted to speed up the process by which they would pursue reunification.”
The Mainland Affairs Council said that China may take a more proactive and hardline approach against Taiwan, so Taiwan will defend its sovereignty and there is absolutely no room for compromise.
Chiu Chui-cheng, Deputy Mainland Affairs Minister: “There is more and more cognitive warfare, but we continue to firmly protect our national sovereignty, freedom, and democracy. There is absolutely no room for compromise on this.”
Former National Security Council Secretary-General Su Chi said President Tsai Ing-wen has manipulated the cross-Strait relationship, democracy, and the will to fight for Taiwan, making the U.S. mistakenly think that Taiwan will maintain the status quo. He believes that the Chinese threat to Taiwan will peak in five years' time. The U.S. military has not transformed, which gives the Chinese military a chance to strike a blow against Taiwan.
Su Chi, Former Secretary-General, National Security Council: “It has no way of defending itself against Chinese missiles. The U.S. is completely unprepared to defend Taiwan.”
Yang Ka-huang, Director, Cross-Strait Research Center, MCU: “The only solution is the reconciliation of China and the U.S. Once they do that, the Taiwan problem will naturally become a smaller problem in the eyes of China.”
Su also said the Tsai administration denies the 1992 Consensus, but has offered no alternative, so how can it promote dialogue? Scholars said the key to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations would be the stabilization of the U.S.-China relationship.
