Tsai, Pompeo Attend WTCC Event 蔡總統偕同龐佩奧 出席台商總會活動

Sept. 28 was the third day of former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Taiwan. He attended a World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce event in Kaohsiung with President Tsai Ing-wen.

President Tsai Ing-wen is flanked by Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chi-mai and others as she enters the venue. On the third day of former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Taiwan, he and Tsai attended a World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce event in Kaohsiung. In her speech, Tsai thanked the WTCC for its efforts around the world. She also said Taiwan's economic force can become a key force in the global economy.

Tsai Ing-wen, President: “Over 1,250 companies have invested a total of nearly NT$1.8 trillion (in three major investment plans). We want the world to not only see Taiwan's good force, but also Taiwan's economic force.”

Chen Chi-mai, Mayor, Kaohsiung City: “Taiwan and the U.S. not only speak about democracy, but also about security matters and trade cooperation. This cooperation can be deepened even more for high tech industries, especially the semiconductor industry.”

Tsai said Taiwan's semiconductor industry is a world focus and she hopes there will be more exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. Pompeo said Taiwan and the U.S. share many important values and the U.S. government will be a good partner for Taiwan.

Mike Pompeo, Former U.S. Secretary of State: “... for the past decades has encouraged American businesses to invest inside of China, to invest alongside the Chinese Communist Party. It was American policy for decades. It's no longer the case.”

This was Pompeo's second visit to Taiwan. This time, his itinerary focused on trade exchanges. It shows that at a time when global supply chains are being restructured, the consensus among democratic countries is to cooperate in promoting democracy and national security as well as efforts to integrate trade cooperation into global supply chains. This should help Taiwan's security and overall competitiveness.

蔡英文在高雄市長陳其邁等人陪同下進場，龐佩奧訪台第3天，兩人共同出席世界台灣商業聯合總會活動。蔡英文致詞時感謝台商在全球的努力，也強調台灣經濟力量能成為全球經濟的關鍵力量。

蔡英文指出：「（投資台灣3大方案）累積的投資，已經有超過1250家企業、將近1.8兆元的投資。我們要讓世界不只看到台灣良善的力量，也要看到台灣的經濟力量。」

陳其邁說：「台美之間不僅在民主的對話，在安全的事務，以及在經貿的合作上。那尤其在半導體等高科技的產業，能夠更深化這個合作。」

蔡英文表示台灣半導體產業是世界焦點，也期待台美之間有更多交流合作。而龐佩奧則表示，台灣跟美國分享了許多重要價值，美國政府會是台灣的好夥伴。

龐佩奧說：「過去數十年來，美國都鼓勵國內企業在中國投資，與中國共產黨一起合作，一直是數十年來的政策，但現在已經不是這樣的情況了。」

龐佩奧二度訪台，主要行程皆與經貿交流相關，可看出在全球供應鏈正重組的當下，民主國家間的共識除了在促進民主及國家安全上合作，經貿合作若能整合到全球供應鏈中，對台灣的安全及整體經濟競爭力也會有很大幫助。
