US Won't Allow Normalization of PLA Drills Around Taiwan: Pelosi
House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the United States could not allow China to normalize the new level of pressure on Taiwan it asserted with days of military drills following her visit.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a press conference in Congress on the 10th regarding her Asian trip. A reporter asked her thoughts on the Chinese military exercises. She said the United States could not allow China to normalize the new level of pressure on Taiwan it asserted with days of military drills.
Nancy Pelosi, US House Speaker: “I think what we saw with China is they were trying to establish sort of a new normal. And we just can't let that happen.”
Pelosi pointed out that her goal in visiting Taiwan is to strengthen the relationship between Taiwan and the United States. She reiterated her support for maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Pelosi stressed that her visit did not violate U.S. policy, and American policy toward Taiwan has not changed.
Nancy Pelosi, US House Speaker: “But in keeping with that, we will not allow China to isolate Taiwan. They have kept Taiwan from participating in the World Health Organization, other things, where Taiwan can make a very valued contribution. And they may keep them from going there, but they will not keep us from going to Taiwan. ”
On the 10th, China published a white paper titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era." Compared with the two whitepapers in 1993 and 2000, this new white paper on the Taiwan issue does not promise not to station PLA troops or send CCP personnel to directly rule over Taiwan. This minimizes Taiwanese space under the one country two systems structure. China's domestic analysts believe Beijing should step up the pace of unification.
Victor Gao, Honorary Professor, China Soochow University: “Now this is the time for all these ambiguities to be clarified. No one, no single country, or groups of countries in the world, can deny Taiwan from China, or take Taiwan away from China. And can make Taiwan a separate, independent, sovereign country.”
Experts have also concluded that China has turned reunification into an "immediate task" rather than a "long-term task." Additionally, this white paper also has added language which does not exclude the use of force in very lengthy detail. Thus, Taiwan must remain vigilant.
