Tunnel Airs Broadcasts in Children's Voices
Hsuehshan Tunnel began broadcasting announcements using the voices of children. This was a collaboration between the Freeway Bureau and Yilan County Government, and the recordings were provided by students at Luodong Nobel Preschool.
“This is a Hsuehshan Tunnel broadcast. This is a Hsuehshan Tunnel broadcast. You are about to enter Yilan.”
On July 4, drivers entering Hsuehshan Tunnel discovered the broadcasts had changed. They were now presented by children. The broadcasts informed motorists that they were about to enter Yilan County. They were also used for tunnels along the improved Suhua Highway. This was a collaboration between the Freeway Bureau and Yilan County Government. The recordings were provided by students at Luodong Nobel Preschool. Hsuehshan Tunnel is the first tunnel to use broadcasts in the voices of children.
Lin Wen-hsiung, Director, Fourth Maintenance Office, DGH: “Driver fatigue frequently occurs in tunnels, especially long ones. We hope these broadcasts in children's voices will be a pleasant change for everyone.”
“It's important to concentrate on driving. Don't look at your phone, that's super dangerous.”
The students spent some time practicing the announcements, including one reminding motorists to concentrate on driving and not on their phones. There are three versions of announcements for Hsuehshan Tunnel and the improved Suhua Highway. They remind motorists about driving slowly to match Yilan's relaxed pace, the zero tolerance for drunk driving, tunnel speed limits, and the ban on changing lanes inside the tunnel, and also ask drivers not to use their phones while driving and to refrain from driving if fatigued. Some residents welcomed this change, but said better articulation is needed because what's most important is for motorists to understand the announcements.
Resident: “You might not be able to understand them. ( Reporter: “Were you able to understand them?”) Children were speaking, so it was a bit unclear already.”
Resident: “If children articulate, then their voices make people feel good. I think any way is good.”
The county government said there were multiple versions recorded, and all have been tested. The versions being used now are the clearest ones. In the future, it will conduct a survey to determine the effect of using broadcasts in children's voices and make progressive reviews.
