Vaccination for elementary school students has started first for schools in the remote areas of Kaohsiung. Elementary students in Yunlin can also apply to get vaccinated at schools or local healthcare facilities approved for vaccination.
All children sat in their seats, maintaining necessary social distance from each other. Healthcare workers then explained the vaccination process and how to take care of its side effects after. These children are students from Siaoping Elementary School in Kaohsiung and they have begun their vaccinations on the 2nd. Parents of 22 students out of 53 have agreed to get their children vaccinated.
Huang Hsiao-tsung, Principal of Siaoping Elementary School, Kaohsiung: “We have 53 students in all and the parents of 22 of them gave their consent to having their kids vaccinated. These parents are quite nervous about the vaccination. Our teachers would remind them to have their kids rest more and to have them drink plenty of water and eat fruits and vegetables after getting vaccinated. Parents took notes.”
Lin Mei-chuan, Head of Parent Teacher Association, Siaoping Elementary School: “Parents who agreed feel that vaccination offers protection not only for their kids but for the rest of the people at school. They believe that vaccination increases protection against COVID-19.”
Vaccination for children has first begun in elementary schools and schools of special education in remote areas in Kaohsiung, such as Siaoping, Xinfa, Duona, and Maolin Elementary Schools. Vaccination has also begun in Yunlin County starting on the 2nd. Parents just need to sign vaccination consent forms for their children and take them to any one of the 109 healthcare facilities approved for vaccination within the county.
Parent in Yunlin: “It should work. (What do you mean?) It should increase protection.”
Parent in Yunlin: “Many parents have a wait-and-see attitude. They are afraid of the strong side effects Moderna can bring.”
In view of more children getting infected with the coronavirus in the nation, Yunlin County Government again encourages parents to get their children vaccinated. Vaccination administered at elementary schools in Yunlin would begin as soon as the 10th. Parents can take their children to local healthcare facilities approved for vaccination if they wish to get vaccinated before the 10th.
