86 Emergency Reports, 14 OHCA in Chiayi County

The arrival of a strong cold front has brought on health issues. Chiayi County Fire Bureau received a total of 86 emergency reports from Feb. 19 to 22nd. Fourteen of those cases suffered from cardiac arrest before reaching the hospital. A doctor said low temperature causes blood vessels to constrict so people with chronic diseases should remember to keep warm during colder weather.

The unconscious, old man sat leaning against the back of the chair. His family member was going to take him to the hospital but the 78-year-old man was too weak. The weather was too cold for him.

Teng Yu-sheng, Firefighter, 2nd Corps, Fire Bureau, Chiayi City: “On the way to the hospital, we discovered his heart was beating slower than usual. The doctor did a quick check-up before sending him into the ER. The weather was too cold and he is suffering from cardiac problems.”

The arrival of another strong cold front seemed to have brought on some health issues. Chiayi County Fire Bureau received a total of 86 emergency reports from Feb. 19 through 8 a.m. on the morning of the 22nd. Fourteen of those cases suffered from cardiac arrest before reaching the hospital. The cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict and the heart needs to work harder to pump blood to the rest of the body. These are conditions that are conducive to the onset of various cardiovascular problems. People with chronic diseases should always remember to keep warm during colder weather, the fire bureau said. The Shou Shan Zoo in Kaohsiung City also prepared blankets, lamps, ginger sweets, and others to provide heat and food for energy for their animals.

Chen Yung-jen, Zookeeper, Kaohsiung Shou Shan Zoo: “They (chimpanzees and orangutans) behave like humans. They would wrap things around their body when they feel cold.”

Chuang Hsuan-chih, Director, Kaohsiung Shou Shan Zoo: “You see them (meerkats) hugging each other to keep warm during cold weather. The group hugged for warmth.”

Meerkats and apes would hug each other and bundle together for warmth. In Kaohsiung, the temperature dropped to 14 degrees Celsius on the 22nd. The Central Weather Bureau said the temperature in Kaohsiung would stay below 15 degrees before Friday, the 25th. It is an interesting and endearing sight to see animals wearing blankets and hugging each other at the zoo.
