Pork prices have recently gone up by about NT$7 per catty starting in January this year. Meat vendors say the price increase is a result of the public concern over the import of ractopamine pork and the coming of Chinese New Year holidays.

The butcher explained that one slice of pork belly weighs around one catty, and the latest price is about NT$125. It used to be NT$115 per catty, which is NT$10 less.

On January 4, a total of 2,439 pigs were sold at the Huwei meat market in Yunlin County, with per catty of pork costing NT$70.74. The average price per catty of pork throughout Taiwan falls at NT$72.10. The director of the Yunlin Huwei meat market said that the increase in price is due to the general anxiety that the public feels over Taiwan opening its market to U.S. pork containing ractopamine and the coming of Chinese New Year holidays.
The import of ractopamine pork begins this January, and we can sense everyone's anxiety over this issue so we have begun to import less. Also, pork price is always expected to go up before Chinese New Year, so local butchers are now preparing the meat and waiting to sell their pork products at the right time for best price.
The average price per catty of pork cost NT$68.7 just last December, and by January 3, it has already increased to just over NT$75, to NT$75.01. The Council of Agriculture (COA) says that pork price is bound to increase before Chinese New Year due the increase in demand, but it is still within a normal range of price variation, with price per catty varying between NT$64.08 to NT$75.96 according to statistics over the past five years. COA also reports an abundant supply of local pork meat and is expecting to sell more than 610,000 number of pigs this month, which is 20,000 more than last year during this period of time.

來到雲林虎尾肉品市場,看看毛豬拍賣的狀況,1月4號最新交易數量 2,439頭,一公斤均價70.74元,全台均價則是落在 72.10元,雲林肉品市場總經理表示,萊豬開放進口加上農曆春節快要到了,受到預期心理影響價格才會上揚。
雲林肉品市場總經理 黃加安表示:「一月開始,就可以進口含有瘦肉精的進口豬肉。因為我們國人還是對這個議題,不是非常放心,所以他們的需求,針對進口豬肉的需求就減少。第二個是豬農,因為預期說,要過年前,豬價都會往上走揚,所以也有說,豬農會晚一點出豬的情況,他們也希望說,可以賣到最高點。」
毛豬拍賣平均價格從去年12月28號每公斤68.7元,一直到1月3號來到75.01元,突破75元;農委會表示,目前豬價仍維持在近五年元月平均價格每公斤64.08元到75.96元的正常區間內,加上年節期間豬肉消費需求增加,豬價也會隨著反映變動,目前豬源供應充裕,本月毛豬供應將達61萬頭以上,比去年同期增加兩萬多頭。
