Man Hospitalized 10 Days After Flu Shot |男子打公費流感疫苗 10天後急症住院

A 51-year-old Taichung resident was hospitalized in the intensive care unit after experiencing symptoms suspected of being side effects of the free flu vaccine he had received on October 10. Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung urged to investigate the matter.

A 51 year-old male Taichung resident surnamed Lin who received the government-funded flu shot on October 10 climbed up the Hehuan Mountain the next day with his wife and started to experience numbness, weakness in lower limbs, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, dysautonomia and shortness of breath on the 19th. He was later hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
He is not taking medicines for any chronic disease and doesn't have any hereditary disease. He received the free flu shot on October 10.

Lin's family member couldn't understand why Lin, who is healthy without any history of chronic disease, was hospitalized for 10 days after receiving the flu shot. Preliminary explanation of Lin's condition is acute neuritis. Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung demanded related authorities to further investigate into the cause of this incident.

The VICP (Vaccine Injury Compensation Program) will study the correlation between the vaccines and the illness. We continue to ask Sanofi to report back cases of adverse reactions from around the world so we can make a judgment.

The Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan explained that the chances for vaccine-induced acute neuritis such as the Guillain-Barre syndrome, are only one in 100,000 to one in a million.

Investigations are still needed to tell if the vaccine caused the neuritis in Lin's case. Even if the vaccine indeed induced the illness, the chances for inducing the Guillain-Barre syndrome are only 1 in 100,000 or 1 in a million. It is more common to see such reactions two to six weeks after receiving the shots. Lin was suffering from the reactions ahead of time, but the problem is who is responsible for inducing the immune system reaction?

The hospital which Lin is currently staying at, has ruled out acute neuritis caused by either virus or bacteria. Whether the reaction is caused by the vaccine is still under assay procedures. The Ministry of Health and Welfare and experts on infectious diseases also explained that the 12 cases of adverse reactions after receiving flu shots were not directly related to the vaccine itself and that the public should not be overly panic.

台中一名51歲的林姓男子，這個月10號施打公費流感疫苗後，隔天還和妻子一起爬合歡山，但在19號突然感覺身體有異狀，20號出現手腳發麻、下肢無力、聲音沙啞、吞嚥困難、自律神經失調和呼吸急促，送醫後住進加護病房。

林姓男子家屬表示：「也沒有在吃什麼慢性病的藥，然後遺傳病史，就也沒有。10月10號，去打的(公費流感)疫苗。」

家屬表示，父親身體健康，沒有慢性病史，無法理解為何打完疫苗後十天，就住進加護病房，目前初步研判是急性神經炎，衛福部長陳時中表示，已要求疫苗相關單位及疫苗公司，進一步釐清因果。

衛福部長陳時中表示：「疫苗救濟小組，來研判它的一個關聯性。沒有，我們還持續請賽諾菲跟我們回報，世界各地的相關的一些不良反應，那我們來做研判。」

台灣感染症醫學會則指出，如果這名林姓男子，罹患的是格林巴利症候群，這種急性神經炎，被疫苗刺激、引發自體免疫系統攻擊神經的可能性，只有十萬到百萬分之一。

台灣感染症醫學會理事長黃立民表示：「所以(林姓男子)這一例，是不是疫苗引起的？這個還需要調查啦！即使是疫苗引起的，因為疫苗引起格(蘭)林巴利症候群，其實是十萬分之一，到百萬分之一的機會。流感疫苗是打完二到六個禮拜，產生這個病，是比較常見的，他是稍微早一點點，他是十天嘛！問題是，誰來驅動這個免疫反應？」

林姓男子就醫的醫院，目前已初步排除病毒和細菌導致急性神經炎，是否疫苗引起來還在化驗中。衛福部及感染科專家則是指出，目前台灣流感疫苗施打以來，出現的12例嚴重不良反應中，都被排除跟疫苗有直接關係，民眾不須過度恐慌。
