There is currently a shortage of the 4-in-1 vaccine, which is required for incoming first graders. The Centers for Disease Control says the COVID-19 situation has caused shipping delays of the vaccine, and its reserve stock will be prioritized for first graders.
The DTap-IPV vaccine is a four-in-one vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and polio. It is required for all first graders. Recently, parents have discovered that the vaccine is out of stock at numerous medical centers.
Parents have been taking their children and health handbooks to get vaccinated, and I had to tell them that it can't be done right now. I told some that even though the children are of age, they're not entering schools just yet, so they can postpone it especially since there is a shortage right now.
The Centers for Disease Control says vaccine manufacturers had to adjust their cargo plane dispatches due to COVID-19, delaying shipments by one to two weeks. Statistics show there are 206,900 children entering first grade this year, and the vaccination rate is already over 84 percent. There are approximately 30,000 unvaccinated children. The CDC has sent notices to local health authorities to ask them to reserve their vaccine stocks for incoming first graders. Around 60,000 doses are scheduled to arrive on July 10 for the use of incoming first graders and children aged five or older.
We asked the manufacturers to expedite our orders so that we can replenish our stock. We would like to replenish the stock everywhere before July 10.
The CDC says the effectiveness of pertussis vaccines declines quickly, so this is why it recommends the four-in-one vaccine as a booster for children who have turned five. Parents shouldn't worry about the shortage, and they can make appointments now to get their children vaccinated after the stocks are replenished.
