The Food and Drug Administration has announced the results of its latest illegal drug abuse survey. Ranking first was amphetamines, followed by ketamine, ecstasy and marijuana. Of particular note, new drugs that are repackaged compound drugs that have appeared in the last few years made the rankings for the first time, placing fifth. Most drug users are young people and the place drugs are most often used are the homes of classmates or friends. Seventy percent use drugs out of curiosity.
New recreational drugs that have appeared in Taiwan in recent years are often disguised as coffee, cigarette, beverage, or stamp packets.
According to a Food and Drug Administration survey, most users of these new drugs are young people with no disparity in gender. Most try drugs for the first time at the homes of classmates or friends, with 70 percent citing curiosity as the reason.
They think it's just a package of instant noodles or a packet of coffee. They don't know there are drugs inside. If someone they know gives it to them, they may ingest (the drugs) accidentally.
The administration says amphetamines are still the top illegal drug in Taiwan, followed by ketamine, ecstasy and marijuana. New compound drugs appeared on the list for the first time, ranking fifth.
Accidental ingestion could lead to addiction or even death due to the possibility of drug interaction or overdose.
The source and dosage (of the drugs) are unknown, so they could result in an extreme reaction like overdose or severe bodily harm.
According to the survey, 204,000 people in Taiwan have used narcotics and nine in 10 people say anti-drug education should be part of school curriculums. The administration says people should not try drugs out of momentary curiosity because they could hurt themselves and their wallets.
