There are growing concerns about the security risks of using products manufactured by Chinese multinational Huawei. On Jan. 15, the Industrial Technology Research Institute cut off access to its wireless network for employees with Huawei mobile phones. The Executive Yuan's Department of Cyber Security says it is not targeting any specific brands, only products with security concerns.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute has become the first domestic entity to take action against Chinese multinational Huawei. Due to growing concerns about the security risks of using Huawei-manufactured products, the ITRI issued an internal memo saying that employees with Huawei phones would no longer be able to access its wireless network starting at noon on Jan. 15 on the grounds of safeguarding information security.
We have always maintained strict controls over our information security. This is meant as a precautionary measure. Our employees can still use those mobile phones, they can use them to get online, they just can't connect to our wireless network.
Several countries including the United States have issued bans on using Huawei technology due to security concerns. The ITRI says it is a national technology research institute, and many of its projects are classified. It is following the government's policy and banning employees with Huawei phones from connecting to its wireless network to uphold information security. The Executive Yuan's Department of Cyber Security says the Information and Communication Security Act stipulates that a comprehensive ban can be enacted for Chinese-made phones and telecom equipment that are considered to be high-risk. It adds it is not targeting any specific brand.
It applies to all Chinese-made products. Apart from Huawei, we have also considered Oppo and Xiaomi.

This national security policy has a hole. The government should go out and formulate an information security policy based on national security.
Huawei is one of the world's largest telecom equipment manufacturers, as well as the second largest smartphone maker. However, security concerns over its products have been growing, and the founder was a former People's Liberation Army officer. The National Communications Commission says it will not only ban Chinese-made core equipment, but also prohibit the purchase of Chinese-made phones for 5G. Scholars add a comprehensive ban can lower the risk of the theft of key technologies and government information.
