Magistrates and mayors were sworn in across Taiwan on Dec. 25. Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan began his second mayoral term by saying he will turn the city into the locomotive that powers Taiwan's economic growth. Meanwhile, Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan announced she will promote Yunlin's specialties and Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei said she will lead Hualien residents to a better future.

Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan was reelected during November's local elections. He was sworn in on Dec. 25 in the public square in front of the Taoyuan City Government with Interior Minister Hsu Kuo-yung as a witness. He said he will establish innovative methods for the city and use the three arrows of Taoyuan Aerotropolis, the Asia Silicon Valley Development Plan and railway construction to turn Taoyuan into the locomotive that powers Taiwan's economic development.

I will do a good and complete job. I will also use this frame of mind to ensure that you will be able to see Cheng Wen-tsan in every corner of this city, just as I did during the past four years.

Meanwhile, outgoing Yunlin County Magistrate Lee Chin-yung did not show up at the ceremony to swear in his successor. The county government's secretary-general was the one who presented the seal to new Magistrate Chang Li-shan. She said she will promote Yunlin's specialty products to get Yunlin noticed and create a better future.

Our goals are to provide job opportunities for our young people, provide support for the elderly, provide opportunities for businesses, provide dignity for the vulnerable, and most importantly, provide a way forward for our Yunlin.

In eastern Taiwan, Hualien County swore in its first-ever female magistrate, Hsu Chen-wei. Acting Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-chung presided over the ceremony, with Hsu receiving the seal of the county government from its secretary-general. Acting Hualien County Magistrate Tsai Pi-chung did not take part. Chen said Tsai did a good job, but Hsu refuted his words in her inaugural speech.

During the past two weeks, I have witnessed the Eastern Bureau and all its subsidiary organizations continue with its campaign to discredit and defame, in an effort to destabilize the government. We are all extremely concerned, so Chen-wei won't start dancing with any of the eastern bureaus. We will continue to work hard to move forward, because Hualien's future depends on the cooperation and hard work of everyone.

The ceremony to inaugurate Taitung County Magistrate Rao Ching-ling took place at the Taitung County Cultural Center. She said the pressure on her is very heavy, but she will work hard to connect Taitung with the world.

The central government's policies are turning Taiwan into a closed country. Under these circumstances, Taitung must open up to the world. It must open up its ideas, its markets and its mind.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included former President Ma Ying-jeou and Alliance Cultural Foundation Chairperson Stanley Yen, and there were around 1,000 people in attendance.
