Research Team Builds VT Training System for Those with Disability|利用VR學技能 提升身心障競爭力

In order to boost the professional competitiveness of those who are physically or mentally impaired, the National Taiwan Normal University and Syin-Lu Social Welfare Foundation collaborated on a virtual-reality (VR) project that helps train these individuals in cutting vegetables and washing cars in order to prepare them for more technical jobs.

Putting on a pair of virtual reality (VR) goggles, allows one to feel that he is actually cutting vegetables in a kitchen. The VR training system, developed by a team from the National Taiwan Normal University, aims to help those who are physically or mentally impaired gain professional competitiveness.

This system is designed for those who are intellectually challenged. Its biggest benefit is that it allows the user to practice a skill repeatedly. Unlike using a real kitchen, the user don't need to prepare the raw materials over and over.

The VR training system allows the user to practice two skills repeatedly, cutting vegetables and washing cars. The design of the system also takes into consideration of work place safety.

The drill forbids the user from cutting if the other hand doesn't move away. Over time, the trainee will go for the right habit, and won't cut his or her own hand.

A green indication appears when the trainee completes a motion correctly. The system will help users learn more complex skills in the future, such as cutting meat and washing the interior of a car. In order to improve the simulation degree, the research team is looking to implement real weight resistance in the training system to give users real physical feedback.
