Air Pollution Spreads to Northern Taiwan|空汙擴散北台灣 西半部全"紅色淪陷"

On November 7, Taiwan's central and southern region saw severe air pollution. The pollutants have been spread to northern Taiwan on November 8, and it has affected the entire western region of Taiwan. By 9 a.m., there are 22 air quality monitoring stations throughout in Taiwan that displays code red alert. The Environmental Protection Administration has reduced the power output of three power plants by a total of 41.86 Gigawatt hour. The EPA has also announced that they will began to inspect the amount of emission from petrochemical plants in southern, central, and northern Taiwan.


As the sun rises in the morning, the residents are greeted with subpar air quality. The Taipei 101 is loomed in dirty air, and the pedestrians on the road are all wearing facemasks. On November 7, the central and southern regions of Taiwan saw severe air pollution, and it has spread to northern Taiwan by Nov. 8. By 9 a.m., 22 of the air quality monitoring stations throughout Taiwan have displayed code red alert. In western Taiwan, regions from north to south have been affected by the pollution.

Starting from yesterday, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung were affected by the east wind. The wind tends be weaker in this area, therefore the pollutants are more likely to accumulate.

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said that, due to the northeast monsoon, rain is expected after nightfall, and the air quality in northern Taiwan could improve. However, the air quality in southern Taiwan won't see any improvement until Sunday. Starting November 7, the output of three power plants in Taiwan has been reduced. The amount of power reduction on November 7 is equivalent to 150 percent of the power output of the Taichung Power Plant. And on November 8, the reduced amount is the equivalent to 70 percent of the output of the Taichung Power Plant. The EPA said that it will begin to inspect the pollutant emission by factories in southern, central, and northern Taiwan.

Our inspect will focus on the following areas: Shulin District in New Taipei, Guishan District in Taoyuan City, Xiangshan District in Hsinchu, as well as Guanlien and Houli District in Taichung City. Our inspection will run through Sunday.

The EPA will inspect a number of industrial districts across Taiwan. The inspection will focus on the manufacturing process of petrochemical plants, the storage tanks, as well as the emission of volatile organic compounds. The inspection will run through Sunday.
