Claw machine stores have taken over Taiwan in the past few years, and many youngsters spend hours there trying to get a prize. New Taipei City recently became the first municipality in Taiwan to draft regulations for the industry. The bill regulates what can be sold in the stores and bans stores within 100 meters of schools.

Claw machine stores are everywhere in Taiwan. There are claw machine stores right next to and right around the corner from this Banciao junior high school. Many students rush to the stores as soon as school is over for the day.

Those that like to play with claw machines will come.

Claw machine prizes range from stuffed animals and instant noodles to 3C products. According to statistics, over half of New Taipei City's 1,134 claw machine stores are located within 200 meters of a school. New Taipei recently became the first municipality in Taiwan to draft management regulations for the industry.

Under Article 47 of the Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act, eight industries and restricted arcades cannot operate within 200 meters of schools. Claw machine stores are categorized as general retail stores, so we set it at 100 meters.

In the future, claw machines in New Taipei will be categorized as "self-service vending machines" and must pass a Ministry of Economic Affairs inspection. In addition, claw machine stores will be banned within 100 meters of schools. The draft also sets prize and consumer rights guidelines. Parents approve of the move, saying the industry should be regulated.

One hundred meters seems a little too close to me. I think it can be more. In general, I think there should be some separation between this place and schools.

One hundred meters actually still seems pretty close. I think it's reasonable.

The draft will be sent to the New Taipei City Council for review. If passed, operators will get a six-month buffer period to bring stores to compliance. After the buffer period, violators will face fines of NT$ 30,000 to NT$ 100,000.
