Hualien and Hong Kong have been joined by direct flights for nearly two years. Recently, people began expressing concerns that direct flights would be stopped after discovering they weren't able to make reservations after November. In response, the Hualien County Government said the number of flights was reduced after a strong February earthquake, but the passenger load factor has been over 90 percent this summer. It is discussing this issue with airlines.
Hong Kong tourists have become a common sight in Hualien's scenic spots and on city streets since direct flights between Hualien and Hong Kong were established nearly two years ago. For Hualien residents, direct flights mean they don't have to take a train to Taipei and then travel to Taoyuan International Airport to get on a plane. Recently, people became expressing concerns that direct flights would be stopped after discovering they couldn't purchase tickets for after November.
I really hope they don't stop direct flights, as it will affect Hualien's tourism. There are many visitors from Hong Kong. For example, during this summer, night markets were full of people, and stores have been doing brisk business.
Hualien County Government statistics show HK Express flew daily to Hualien last year, and the passenger load factor was 70 percent. However, the load factor dropped to 35 percent following the devastating earthquake on Feb. 6. The airline then decided to reduce flights to four a week between July 1 and Oct. 27. However, the passenger load factor for Hong Kong to Hualien flights this summer has been very high. In particular, the orange day lily season attracted many Hong Kong visitors. The county government therefore believes direct flights will continue.
The tourism industry has recovered very quickly. Our own investigation shows the current passenger load factor is over 93 percent. (Has the airline responded to the county government?) We are currently seeking confirmation.
HK Express began offering direct flights to Hualien on Dec. 6, 2016. The contract expires at the end of October. The county government and the airline are currently discussing a contract renewal.
