The Taipei City government recently began to allow private parking spot owners to rent out their spots for up to 8 hours a day, and 240 hours per month. The new plan aims to ease the challenge of finding parking spaces in big cities

In order to alleviate the challenge of finding parking spaces in big cities such as Taipei, the city government began to issue permits in June that allow private parking lot owners to share the spaces with others for profit. The new system allows users to unlock shared parking spots via a mobile phone app.

Traditionally, each parking lot requires its own distinct parking registration, but these smaller-scale parking lots have limited space and only a few spots. With our new plan, we will allow multiple smaller parking lots to be registered as one.

Sharing private parking spot when not in use by the owner would help alleviate the chronicle parking problem in big cities. However, the concept was hindered by administrative regulations. Thanks to the newly amended regulations of the Ministry of Transportation, private parking spot owners are allowed to rent out their spots for up to 8 hours per day, and 240 hours a week. Upon obtaining the permits required to rent out parking spots, the owners will also register with the management of their apartment buildings.

(The new relaxed regulations) now allow the users to take control of the spots. We, the owners don't have to be present to unlock the spots for them, they have access to the parking spaces on their own time via a mobile phone app.

The question of whether sharing the parking spots should result in higher land taxes still remains. The Taipei City government has suggested to the Ministry of Transportation to allow parking spot owners to maintain their tax interest in order to encourage more sharing.
