Taiwan Railways' Puyuma Express trains have tables with seats that face each other. A traveler recently wrote in to Taiwan Railways saying it's really awkward to sit facing someone they don't know and that Taiwan Railways should go back to normal seats. Taiwan Railways has sent out surveys and will use big data to make their decision.
Puyuma Express trains have table seats facing each other so passengers can eat and chat with travel companions while on board. Some travelers like the design, while others say it is awkward to sit facing someone they don't know.
You never know, you might end up making a new friend.
If you don't know the other person and you extend your legs, you might end up kicking them. There could be more leg room.
Taiwan Railways says Puyuma Express trains have a capacity of 372 and there are only table seats in two of the cars. At four seats per table and four tables per car, table seats only account for 16 of each train's total seats. People that want to reserve table seats have to reserve all four at the same time and the seats are only sold separately if they remain empty three days before the departure date. As Taiwan Railways has gotten many complaints from people about not wanting to sit facing someone they don't know, it has started surveying travelers.
The trains were designed like this so families can sit together on the train. However, some people might find it awkward to sit shoulder-to-shoulder with someone they don't know. Taiwan Railways has received this recommendation and we are researching the issue.
Taiwan Railways says it will use data analysis and big data analysis to decide whether table seats stay or go, but it has no timetable for making the decision.
