New Regulation Simplifies Tax Return Process|日本購物新制 滿5千日圓就可退稅

Good news to shoppers who like to buy from Japan ! A new regulation on tax-free shopping in Japan takes effect starting July. The new regulation will allow all purchases above 5,000 Japanese Yen or the equivalent of NT$1,376 to be duty free.


The older version of tax-free shopping regulations tends to be confusing and time consuming due to its many articles on different types of goods. The new regulation has hence simplified the process. Starting July 1, all purchases in Japan above 5,000 Japanese Yen, or NT$1,376 will be exempted from the 8 percent consumer tax. So, if a consumer purchases 2,500 Japanese Yen worth of cosmetic product plus 2,500 Japanese Yen worth of clothing, he or she will be exempted from consumer tax. The upper limit for duty-free shopping is 500,000 Japanese Yen, or NT$ 138,000.
