An inspiring story to look at: Touched by the story of dying children,a 17-year-old girl had begun donating her allowance to buy mosquito nets for African children starting when she was five. She was named as Africa Mosquito Net Ambassado and was recently invited to Taiwan to share her "" story
Vice President Chen Chien-jen recently invited American teen Katherine Commale to visit Taiwan to present awards to elementary school students involved in community service. Commale was five when she learned that malaria kills one child every 30 seconds in Africa. She immediately started using her allowance to buy mosquito nets for African children. After her story went viral, Bill Gates donated US$3 million to a campaign to wipe out malaria in Africa.
The thing that I've noticed when I started at five -- I'm now 17 years old -- has been the statistic change from every 30 seconds a child dies, and now it's up to 120 seconds. So, just those 10, 12 years that I put into this work, I know that that statistic has improved and that's what really keeps me going.
If you would've told me 12 years later that we would be in Taiwan talking to all of you, I wouldn't have believed it. So you just, you never know that journey that it's gonna take you on and you never know how many lives that you can impact.
Commale shared her story with audiences in both Taichung and Taipei. Chen said he was very moved by her kindness.
Look at their family. They are truly great people. I want to tell all the parents that are here today, and the teachers as well, that although children's dreams are very small, they shouldn't be ignored.
Commale says she has been telling people about the importance of giving back for over a decade in the hopes of creating a butterfly effect. She also wants to show everyone that one person can make a difference in the world, and says she says she will continue fighting for children's health in Africa.
